Stone guest house overlooking Corfu Bay

Architects Tony Wynbourne, Georgios Apostolopoulos, and engineer Makis Gisdakis have completed a contemporary Stone guest house overlooking Corfu Bay. The traditionally styled building combines local building techniques with a clean, contemporary aesthetic, and celebrates the harmony between nature and architecture.

The main material used in the construction of the house was natural stone, processed by local craftsmen. It not only connects the building with the landscape but also refers to the architectural heritage of the Greek island of Corfu. Instead of smoothing out the rocky ledges, the architects integrated them into the design of the building. Panoramic glazing and minimalist frames bring a modern spirit to the project without violating the dialogue of eras. Terraces and steps leading to the pool, which seem to dissolve into the horizon, strengthen the connection with nature.

The architects stretched the house along an east-west axis so that every room had a view of the Ionian Sea. The space at the entrance on the ground floor divides the interior into a guest area with a kitchen living room and master bedroom. Four additional bedrooms with bathrooms are located on the lower level, where the illuminated arches of the exposed rocks create an atmosphere of privacy.

The interiors are designed in a restrained color palette: the space is defined by white walls, light gray stone on the floor and ceiling beams in pastel colors. Veined marble countertops and glossy surfaces in the kitchen and bathrooms add elegance to the interior. “Minimalism here is not a style, but a way to strengthen the connection with the landscape,” the authors of the project note.

The project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can be both functional and respectful of its context. Every element, from the stone walls to the hidden lighting, develops the idea of unity with nature and invites guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Corfu without unnecessary pomp.
