The wooden house, designed by the Atelier Schwimmer studio, was built in a summer resort that many Montrealers love - on the shores of the beautiful Lake Brom. The country house was created for two brothers, they treat outdoor activities as part of their dynamic city life. One of their wishes was to create a place where it is pleasant to spend time with friends.
The building stands in a picturesque holiday village. Atelier Schwimmer Studio, headed by Felix Schwimmer, built this black hut among old 19th-century houses and new modest cottages. The volume is divided in half by a vertical atrium with a concrete floor and a fireplace in the center of the common living room.
Conceived as an archetypal house, the structure has three entrances and a covered terrace. All features are centered around an atrium that looks out onto the street. This triple-height zone is clearly visible from any point, creating, according to the authors of the project, a "canyon of hospitality". On both sides of the "canyon", on different levels, there are four bedrooms.
The façade is sheathed with larch, processed in two ways. Charred boards protrude slightly and are combined with recessed boards soaked in natural oil. This peculiar play of shades enhances the image.
The décor combines icons of Danish design, including Hans Wehner's famous Wishbone chairs (1949) for Carl Hansen & Søn, with simple, practical Ikea furniture. As a play and sports element reminiscent of the young energy of the inhabitants of the house, a rope descends into the living room - you can, if desired, climb to the upper tiers of the building.
