British studio Will Gamble Architects has renovated a Victorian house in south London, using a palette of natural materials to create a serene atmosphere. The clients asked the architects to create a calm and uncluttered space in their home in the Putney area.
“We wanted to maximise the visual space through various design tricks,” says project author Will Gamble. “And we chose soft minimalism with its curved lines, calm shades, natural materials and carefully selected details because this aesthetic allowed us to implement a bespoke project tailored to our clients’ needs.”
Arched niches and a staircase with semi-circular landings, balusters and a curved oak handrail soften the geometry of the space. Muted light shades in the interior create a feeling of spaciousness, while more textured materials, including rich oak and veined marble, demonstrate the individuality of the project. Natural light penetrating through the windows highlights the complex colors of the surfaces.
Much of the millwork and cabinetry is custom-made for this project. Some of the design, like the headboard in the master bedroom that provides extra storage and also hides the bathroom, is functional. Others, like the textured oak that appears throughout the space, are aesthetic—to tie the spaces together.
