Tired of the usual decorative clutter? These clever designer tricks prove you don’t need extra decor to make your space stand out. From textured walls to unexpected finishes, top designers are turning to bold, beautiful surfaces that do all the talking. If you’re ready to rethink your interior style, these five ideas will inspire a fresh, modern approach without overcomplicating your space.
1. Wallpaper on the ceiling
Today, more and more designers are choosing a non-white ceiling, but it is more common to use paint for finishing. But what if we consider the option with wallpaper? This is a finishing option for a children’s room in her project.
By choosing wallpaper with a fairytale forest pattern, we managed to create such a mood in the entire room – magical, even mysterious in some ways. The wallpaper goes from the wall by the bed to the ceiling and to the opposite wall, thus highlighting the place for rest. The storage areas (cabinets) and study (there is a table by the window) are decorated with paint.
2. Plaster bas-relief
An accent wall can be decorated in a variety of ways. The most popular solutions today are paint, panels (plaster, wood, MDF, or polyurethane), or wallpaper.
In the project by Refectio design studio, they did not use popular solutions, but made a bas-relief from plaster. The wall now depicts voluminous leaves that delicately decorate the minimalist bedroom. If you like minimalism, but want to bring variety to it, take note of the idea.
3. Relief tiles
Tiles are a common material for decorating walls in the bathroom, toilet, and kitchen backsplash, but they are very rarely used outside of these rooms. Modern options for decorating tiles allow you to make a full-fledged interior decoration out of them.
Thus, in her project, designer Marina used small-format relief tiles of a delicate peach color. They laid out the wall in the TV area. The living room is combined with the kitchen, and the same tiles were used to decorate the kitchen apron, which created unobtrusive visual intersections and made the space more harmonious.
4. Arch of paint
Arched shapes are back in fashion! In a modern interpretation, they are minimalistic and delicate, and you can’t overdo it with them, so as not to overload the interior. So, in the project of this apartment, designer Mia Grabchak used arched shapes in the form of a partition between the living room and the kitchen, in the tiles on the apron, and also in the painting of the wall at the head of the bed. The mustard arch, according to the designer, symbolizes the sunrise. In general, mustard color is very positive, natural, and not as flashy as yellow. These are its advantages, and these properties make it suitable even for the bedroom.
5. Wall made of decorative bricks
A few years ago, brick firmly established itself as a finishing material due to the popularity of lofts. Then people got a little tired of it. Today, it appears less often, designers prefer its point of use and only if it matches the style of the interior, the features of the house.
So, in Anastasia’s project, a brick wall was made… in the bathroom. Moreover, the edges of the brick are intentionally uneven, and hidden lighting was also installed along the edges. Quite a lot of different finishes were used in the design of the bathroom: these are Mettlach tiles on the floor, and hand-made tiles on the walls, and paint. At the same time, the space does not look overloaded, and the brick adds eclecticism.
